WELCOME to the first ever installment of Val’s Variety Show, where I’ll talk about whatever random thing happens to cross my not-so-normal mind that month. Sometimes serious, sometimes silly (okay, USUALLY silly, probably!), and often about books.
This time: MONSTER PARODIES!
This week was my birthday, and one of my besties knows my love for monsters, ghoulies, and all things creepy or otherwise weird. She ALSO knows how much I love books, and that my kids are monster lovers as well, and found the ABSOLUTE perfect gift! Now, I am not going to recommend these for children. Whether or not your child/children/kid-you-want-gift is able to handle these or not is up to you. I don’t know your kids, and some are frightened of things like this. My 9 and 10 year old boys thought they were a hoot to read to their not-quite-2 sister, and she liked growling at the pictures of her fellow monners. So, keep that in mind if you decide to buy these for kids. I TOTALLY recommend them for adult collections, they’re so freaking cool!
As with all of my posts, you can click on book covers to be linked to their Amazon product page via my affiliate link.
Gift #1 The Very Hungry Zombie
In this dead-on parody of a children’s classic, a very hungry zombie eats his way through a variety of his favorite foods, including clowns, astronauts, rock stars, fingers, and brains. With vivid, playful art and amusing text, The Very Hungry Zombie will appeal to picture-book lovers of all ages. Adults will catch its slightly demented humor. Older kids who grew up on classic board books will love the fun of the parody. And because the art leans toward humor rather than truly graphic grossness, a new generation of little ones may just grow up loving a creepy zombie whose gluttony earns him a bellyache.
Beware! This equal opportunity ghoulish gourmand would just love to have you for dinner!
I love it, y’all. SO MUCH.
Gift #2 Goodnight Goon
It’s time for bed, but one little goon still isn’t ready for sleep! With lively rhymes and cheeky art that’ll get readers howling, this hilarious take on the beloved classic will have a whole new audience saying, “Goodnight monsters everywhere!”
I’m not even gonna lie, this is our new favorite book to read. Play time, story time, bed time, that little girl of mine keeps bringing it back to me over and over again!
Gift #3: Runaway Mummy
A hysterical (and creepy) parody of a children’s classic!
Filled with uproarious illustrations, a beloved classic gets a kindhearted send-up in this utterly monsterized parody from Michael Rex, creator of the New York Times bestselling Goodnight Goon. This is The Runaway Bunny like you’ve never seen it before. Kids will dig the vast array of terrible monsters, but parents will love the sweet sentiment. A fabulous Halloween treat for all those little monsters!
Yes, we love this one, too. The kids had a blast pointing out the ‘goon’ from Goodnight Goon being in this one, too, and Little Girl just laughed and laughed when I did voices throughout.
I actually had something else planned for y’all this week, but it’s a very serious subject and is going to take some time to get the wording right on it. These babies came just in the nick of time, and took my mind off all the bad in the world for a bit! I hope you all like them, too.
Love and Creepiness,
